For some time I've been looking for a way to display a very old doll that belonged to my mother, because why have a thing like that if it's going to sit around in a box on a top shelf. A few weeks ago I saw an old display case, made around 1900, in an antique store a few minutes from my house. It looked like just the thing, but I didn't buy it right then because it was probably not going anywhere and it was pretty big and kind of spendy, so I wanted to make sure I really wanted it and knew where I'd put it and all.

So I got to where I was thinking I'd go buy it the next chance I got to get over to that store. But Saturday morning, which was my birthday, I got up and went downstairs, and there was my display case on the dining room table with a big orange bow on top.

Here it is with the doll, and also my most coolest piece of Victorian majolica--both on display and safe from cats!

I meant to post a Happy Birthday post for you, but I was away from the keyboard all weekend. So Happy Belated Birthday!

Very nice case. And love the froggie pitcher! =)

Thanks! I got a couple of birthday presents today, so I'm counting today as still my birthday, which puts you right on time.

I am so happy about that pitcher--I wanted one forever but they're very rare and heinously expensive, and it doesn't help that they're pictured in the books about majolica pottery. I got that one by happy accident--he's in pretty rough shape and the seller either didn't know what it was or thought that it was in too bad a condition to try to get much for. But it's cool to me just to have it; I don't really need it to be perfect.

Happy Birthday! The frog is very cool, as is the doll, but it's the display case that makes my heart go pitter-pat. For some reason, I'm nuts about display cases like that. I have one almost identical to that one, plus several smaller.

He's always very good at selecting gifts, but this one is his best yet! And yes, I could see myself wanting a few more of these...

I find that display inexplicably creepy.

Dolls are usually creepy, and antique dolls even more so--I could never be a doll collector. Also, it looks just human enough that putting it under glass seems vaguely Mad Scientist.

And then if you add a frog designed to pour cream out of its mouth...

Or maybe none of that's it. But I'm definitely not satisfied with the composition of this little scene. I hope to do better after I get one or two more items for safe display of irreplaceable breakables.

Happy belated birthday! I'm sorry I missed it. I guess I'm just used to associating it with the conference and the conference starts next week. Although I should have figured it out since the conference is in April this year...
