Fireplaces sure are warm and cozy, aren't they?

Actually, no. For those of you who've never lived with a fireplace, or who, like me, tend to substitute romantic notions about fireplaces for memories of actual experiences, here's a reminder.

Your average home fireplace is meant to be decorative or recreational rather than a source of heat for your house. When you light a fire, the rest of the heat in your place is very likely to be sucked right up the chimney and out of the house, leaving you sitting in front of your cute little blaze freezing your chestnuts off.

That's why houses with functional fireplaces are quite old. People don't heat with fireplaces, they heat with stoves.

This is why you make a big conflagration. I've never felt colder in front of a healthy fire. (Although I completely agree that it's not an efficient home heating method.)

Fireplace reflectors - essentially, big flat pieces of stainless steel - help bounce out the radiant heat from the fire out into the room. There's also the Texas Physicist's Fireframe, which helps accomplish much the same thing: push the heat out, not up. But heating your house with wood either requires a house built around the fireplace, or a stove. You want to get every ounce of heat possible out of the wood.

Hm. The fireplace here at my sister's seems to be downright cozy.

That's why we close the flue almost all the way, then fill up the fireplace with candles. It's even prettier than a "real" fire, too!
